CASA CARLOS GARDEL MUSEUM
-
Address: Jean Jaurés 735 – Buenos Aires
-
Opens Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday: 11 am to 6 pm
Saturdays & Sundays: 10 am to 7 pm. Tuesday closed.
Carlos Gardel was one of the most popular artists from the National Tango history, and he is still a symbol for the porteños. The museum is located in the last house the singer lived in Buenos Aires.
Gardel was born in 1890 in Toulouse, France, and he arrived to Buenos Aires with his mother two years later. He was raised in the Abasto neighbourhood, and in the 10's he started to sing country songs and milongas; later on he turned into the pioneer of the tango-song. His way of singing is still canonical.
Gardel recorded albums and acted in movies in Latinamerica, Europe and the United States; he also composed songs that became classics, such as "El día que me quieras," "Arrabal Amargo," "Volver," and "Cuesta Abajo."
He died in a plane crash in Medellín, Colombia, in 1935. He was buried in the Chacarita Cemetery, where his tomb can be visited.
In 1927 Gardel bought the house that nowadays hosts the museum for his mother Berta. He lived in this house with her until the last year he spent in Argentina, in 1933. The construction, a "casa chorizo," is typical from the first half of the 20th Century.
The museum exhibits personal articles from Gardel and samples of his work.
ISAAC FERNANDEZ BLANCO MUSEUM OF SPANISH-AMERICAN ART
-
Address: Suipacha 1422 – Buenos Aires
-
Opens: Tuesday to Friday: 2 pm to 7 pm; Saturday & Sunday: 11 am to 7 pm.

The museum’s collection, housed in the neo-colonial Noel Palace, consists primarily of silverwork, imagery, paintings, furniture, books and documents that belonged to Don Isaac Fernández Blanco, wealthy descendent of a family that arrived to Buenos Aires in the 18th century. Other items belong to the González Garaño family, which has been a museum donor for several decades. In addition, the museum acquires individual or group collections; recently it included architect Martín Noel’s collection of Spanish ceramics.
POPULAR ART JOSE HERNANDEZ MUSEUM
-
Address: Av. Del Libertador 2373 – Buenos Aires
-
Opens: Wednesday to Friday: 1 pm to 7 pm; Saturday & Sunday: 10 am to 8 pm.
Closed on Monday & Tuesday.
This museum has some 8,000 objects in its collections, which focus on historical and contemporary handicrafts that are representative of Argentina’s Creole traditions and aboriginal communities. These items, made using various materials and techniques and for diverse purposes, are organized according to the following categories: pottery, wax, vegetable fibers, wood, horn and bone, gourds, silver, imagery, masks, musical instruments, fabric, glass and porcelain, stone and iron. What these handicrafts have in common is that they all participate in the same process of symbolic re-significance – evoking the rural past and origins of the Argentine nation. At the beginning of the 20th century, these items began to be considered part of our cultural heritage. The museum’s collections also include paintings, engravings, cutting and thrusting weapons and firearms, as well as some 2,000 photographs, documentation about traditionalism in Argentina and an important library with over 13,000 volumes.
