RIDES

BUS (Colectivo):

How to run a bus in BA: Board it at the front door, say to the driver “uno veinticinco”,  put into the machine a one peso and a 25 cents coin, and wait for the ticket to be dropped below. If you put a higher value coin, return change will be dropped also. Then sit down, if you can, and get out through the back door, if you know where.

SUBWAY (Subte):

Metro (tube, subway, under, etc) is cheaper, and paying is easier. You go to the booth and ask for uno, dos, etc trips, usually dos if you are returning by metro as well. The price per trip is 1.10 pesos, no need to pay exact fare. If there are machines it is better to stay away from them, as in Paris, or DC. Maps for the subway net are available at the hotel, at the station, or even in internet. Google it! The great deal about the subway are the murals in some stations. The best line for murals is line C. Line A, is worth because its 1910 art nouveau coaches. All lines are interconnected, Remember that line A takes you to have five o’clock tea at Las Violetas (Carlos Calvo station), and line B to have a good meal to Albamonte (Federico Lacroze).

TAXIS (Taxis. It s pronounced “taxi”, as in Athens and Manhattan):

You have to pay what it appears on the taxi-meter, and there is no table of conversion at all. Tipping is not expected, but you can round up facilitating the change. The country is short of coins and the 2 $A bill (50 cents of an US$) are the smallest available currency quite frequently. You easily recognize free cabs on the streets because they run at very slow speed, and very near the right curb. Just raise your hand; board, and tell your destination. Foreigners are at risk to be cheated a few pesos; nothing more serious than that. Most of you will find taxi rides quite cheap according to your standards.

FURTHER HINTS

STEAKS.
In Argentina “meat”(carne), means “beef” (vaca). Other animals as pork, or lamb are considered fishes, and they are rarely found. No waiter will tell you: “the state of North Carolina does not allow serving meat cooked below medium-well done”; he will just serve you “medium-well done” no matter what do you ask him for.

CHORIZO AND BIFE DE CHORIZO
One of our favorite sport is not calling things by their names. While a “chorizo” is a sausage, a “bife de chorizo” is a big steak, similar to a sirloin steak. Do not ask me why.

RESTROOMS
During your strolls through the city only occasionally you will find public restrooms, but you can enter any café or bar, ask for “el banio” and use it. It is better to carry some toilet paper from the hotel. We have the habit to steal them from bathrooms to throw them out as carnival serpentines in the stadium during soccer games. It is fun!
